Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)

Overview:

Develop and promote your capacity to work as Certified ophthalmic.

Assistant within the team of eye care in integration with the roles of Ophthalmologist and Ophthalmic nurse.  Obtain an international accredited certification as per the standards of International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) and International Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) and experience a mix of interactive sessions and practical applications of essential clinical skills.

Duration:
6-months course (one day per week)

Learning objectives:
By the end of the lectures and the series of workshops of this program, the Participants will be able to:

Perform clinical tasks and duties relevant to the curriculum of Certified Ophthalmic Assistant as defined by IJCAHPO and ICO based on the five core competencies of patient care, medical knowledge, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills, technical and scientific skills, and finally community and health services
Grasp in details knowledge essential for the COA as defined in the curriculum of IJCAHPO and ICO.
Demonstrate appreciation to the role of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (AHPO) and willingness to perform it in integral approach with other eye care providers

Basic anatomy and physiology of the Eye
Diseases and Disorders of the Eye
Optics and Refractive States
Comprehensive Medical Eye Examinations
Biometry and Practical Optician
Medical Ethics
Patient Interaction, Screening and Emergencies
Community Eye Health
Care of Ophthalmic lenses and Instruments
Minor surgical Assisting in the Office

Teaching methods:
Deductive lectures and interactive sessions.
Laboratory practical sessions for related ophthalmic equipment
Practical implementation sessions for clinical duties at the outpatient clinic and the unit for investigations at Magrabi Hospital/Cairo
Self-Assessment methods
Final multiple-choice questions online examination in one setting set by IJCAHPO

The skills of focus in this program are:
• Provide the participants with the necessary skills to work closely with the ophthalmologist as assistants at the entry level of the profession

Final award:
Internationally Accredited Certificate is awarded by IJCAHPO for students who successfully pass the final exam of the IJCAHPO.
Participation Certificate is awarded by Professional education and training unit of the Magrabi foundation for students who complete the course and pass the final exam of the unit.
